New Kickboxing Gym Packs a Punch in Brownsville

9Round, a specialized fitness center that brings boxing and kickboxing fitness training to the average person in a convenient, affordable, 30-minute, full body circuit format, is continuing its rapid expansion by opening its first location in Brownsville.

The new gym, located at 3341 Pablo Kisel Blvd., is slated to open in early December, with company plans calling for as many as five gyms throughout the metro-area over the next few years.

“9Round is more than just a gym—it’s a community, an experience and a lifestyle,” said 9Round Brownsville owner, Jose Maria Larrazolo. “When people take a 9Round workout, they’re surrounded by fitness enthusiasts who are motivated to help their peers achieve their fitness goals.”

This new gym is the first business venture for owner, Larrazolo. Prior to opening his first 9Round location, Larrazolo worked in various roles throughout Brownsville with companies, including the Port of Brownsville and Luke Fruia Motors, a Brownsville-based Cadillac dealer. And after ending a successful career as a high school boxer, Larrazolo quickly discovered a passion for health and fitness. This year he decided to make his passion a reality by taking an entrepreneurial leap and opening his first 9Round studio.

“After first discovering the 9Round experience at a Houston location, I was eager to introduce this unique workout to the members of my community,” said Larrazolo. “There is truly nothing like it in my city. 9Round takes professional kickboxing workouts and tailors them for the average person so that he or she can train like a real fighter, but with a realistic workout.”

Developed by reigning IKF Light Middleweight Kickboxing Champion of the World, Shannon “The Cannon” Hudson, 9Round workouts consist of nine, three-minute stations of activities that include cardio, weight training, abdominal exercises and kicks and punches on 100-pound, double-end, upper cut and speed bags. A real boxing bell rings to begin the workout, another to warn the station is ending and a third to signal the end. Members have a 30-second active break between rounds to recover.

There are no class times, trainers are always on site to lead the workouts, and routines change daily, giving members a fresh workout every time they come in.

9Round Brownsville will be open Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.

First time visitors can try the 30-minute workout for free.

Membership includes hand wraps, boxing gloves, online nutrition support and guidance as well as one-on-one training. First time guests get a free workout. For more information, call 956-622-7717.
