Raising the Cashie and Making Dreams Come True

Cashie the Cat, Cash Converters’ loveable mascot and his team have completed the famous Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle challenge and raised an impressive £85,000 for national children’s charity, Dreams Come True.

The amount achieved will grant the wishes of seriously and terminally ill children across the UK which includes fulfilling dreams of meeting pop stars, memorable day trips and amazing holidays. Cash Converters has supported Dreams Come True since 2008 and thanks to this recent fundraiser have now raised in excess of £235,000.

Carl Murray, MD of the London franchise network of Cash Converters stores led the team – including Paul Graham and Richard Addison – took on the challenge of cycling 1,000 miles across the country. The team set off on Monday 14th July and arrived at their destination 11 days later on the 25th July.

The journey saw them stopping off along the way at towns including Yeovil, Lockerbie and Fort William. The team were greeted by their supportive colleagues at the Plymouth and Worcester stores who hosted fun days to encourage further fundraising towards their £100,000 target.

When the cyclists reached Runcorn, home of Cash Converters’ Head Offices, they were joined by colleagues for a sponsored static bike ride and upon reaching Manchester were invited to do a lap of the famous Velodrome.

A celebratory gala dinner and charity auction was also held at Manchester City Football Club, raising a huge £11,800 towards to the fundraising goal. Prizes included a signed Hull FA Cup Final shirt, tickets to the Final of the World Darts Championship and a week’s holiday on the Costa Del Sol.

The unusually warm weather in July added to the challenges the team faced with temperatures reaching highs of 30 degrees Celsius across the UK. In such trying conditions their achievement which includes a climb of over 19,000 metres is a truly laudable feat.

Carl Murray said: “The ride posed many challenges but constant encouragement from family, friends and colleagues kept morale high and motivated us to keep going. We are all really pleased with our accomplishment and want to encourage everyone to keep donating to the worthwhile cause.”

David Patrick, Chief Executive of Cash Converters applauded his team saying: “We are all hugely proud of the success achieved by Carl, Paul, Richard and their dedicated support team. Our relationship with Dreams Come True is very important to us and we are delighted to be able to add to their fundraising efforts with this remarkable £85,000 donation. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far and helped to make the fundraiser such a triumph.”

Peter Newman, the charity’s Chief Executive, said: “I would like to personally thank all of those involved in the fundraising efforts over the last six months. We are hugely grateful to Cash Converters for their unwavering support throughout our partnership. Volunteers such as those who took part in the cycle are the reason we are able to continue the important work we do at Dreams Come True.”
