Just over two years after developing its clinically researched program which promotes healthy weight loss, the numbers on members’ scales are the only piece of Profile by Sanford that’s getting smaller.
The Sioux Falls-based weight management program is in the midst of a major expansion mode.
Launched in 2012 and franchising since 2014, Profile has grown its national footprint to include 19 locations and more than 10,000 members in six states. Through a combination of corporate and franchise stores, the burgeoning weight loss franchise plans to open 10-15 additional locations over the next 12 months and have more than 150 stores nationwide by 2020.
“We feel we have a tiger by the tail with this concept. It’s something right on the edge of exploding, and it’s such a welcome concept,” said Nate Malloy, Profile’s chief operating officer. “Everyone loves the weight loss, but we’re doing it through a very specific and common-sense approach, and so for that reason I think the sky’s the limit.”
Designed by a team of physicians and researchers from Sanford Health, one of the largest not-for-profit health care systems in the United States, Profile by Sanford’s core business is focused around three areas: Nutrition, Activity and Lifestyle. The rapidly growing system utilizes more than 80 different meal-replacement products and nutritionally complete Profile-produced and grocery-store foods, as well as qualified health coaches who develop customized plans for their clients and offer advice on nutrition, exercise and behavior.
In addition to face-to-face meetings, coaches are able to efficiently track members’ progress through the use of smart wireless technology. Each member is outfitted with wireless devices to measure progress, including tools to track body weight, hydration, body fat percentage and blood pressure. These devices automatically upload to a secure server, where members and coaches can monitor improvement on the web or mobile applications. Printed options are also available to members.
“Our integrated weight management system puts the research of physicians and scientists into action by helping our members overcome stressful self-dieting and poor results,” Malloy said. “Profile helps our members break the cycle by removing the guesswork with the tools they need to reach their weight loss goals.”
So far, the only franchise market is in Lincoln, Nebraska, where Steve Holzwarth opened a location in July 2014.
“The members that have been on the plan, and those that have been interested, have been very pleased that we are here and how each plan is tailored to each member,” said Holzwarth. “They like that it isn’t cookie-cutter, and we are here for the long haul for them.”
To augment the concept’s growth, Profile is seeking others like Holzwarth interested in capitalizing on the more than $20 billion U.S. weight loss industry and help fight the growing epidemic of obesity in this country. With a franchise fee of $30,000, the total investment to own and operate a 2,000-2,500 square foot store ranges from $259,200 to $463,500.
